The
MTV Video Music Awards are coming up Sunday night in Los Angeles. And
with exhibitionist extraordinaire Miley Cyrus as the evening’s host and
enfant terrible Jeremy Scott as the unofficial designer muse and Moonman trophy retoucher, the fashion should not disappoint.
Predictably,
Cyrus and many other women will probably strip down to dress up.
Nowadays, near-nudity on stage and on the red carpet has become so
commonplace (see this year’s Met Gala) that it hardly raises an eyebrow anymore.
But before Miley, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian were doing it, Rose McGowan started it all
at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, letting her bum and bits hang out
in a mesh chain number that managed to steal the spotlight from her
then-beau (and frequent butt-barer), goth rocker Marilyn Manson.
The
next year, at the 1999 VMAs, Lil Kim first unleashed the
nipple-pasties-as-formalwear look on the world, wearing a godawful
lavender lace, one-sleeved jumpsuit cut to reveal a single, pastied
breast. During the show, presenter Diana Ross greeted Kim onstage by
giving her exposed breast a little jiggle. (Who would have thought then
that the pasties look would go from stripper pole to red carpet to high
fashion runways, as seen in Tom Ford’s spring 2015 collection, then back
again?)
Thanks to the VMAs red carpet, by the dawn of the new
millennium, how-bare-can-you-go had become a group dare in Hollywood --
and not just at cable TV awards shows either. In 2000, Jennifer Lopez
seemed to defy gravity at no less than the Grammys when she wore a leafy
green, plunging Versace gown cut so low you could see her belly button.
From
then on, the race was on to see who could dress less to impress on the
red carpet. Rihanna seemed to drop the mic in 2014 at the CFDA Awards,
when she wore an entirely sheer crystal mesh dress by Adam Selman. And
yet the trend has showed no signs of stopping, and it would not surprise
me one bit to see someone pulling a full-on Lady Godiva one of these
days. (The only question is, would anyone care?)
Cyrus has already given us quite a fashion peep show in the lead-up to Sunday’s big event.
In
a promo video released Aug. 4, she was nearly topless, wearing just a
hot pink suspender thong and green nipple pasties, and flashing a big
smile and that famous tongue.
And
on Wednesday night's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", she wore pink sequin
heart-shaped nipple pasties purchased on Hollywood Boulevard (along with
a sparkly rainbow cape, skirt and some plastic raver hair toys and
dreads) and seemed to relish Kimmel’s discomfort. Cyrus said that
wearing as little as possible has helped alleviate her social anxiety
because seeing people squirm is “a nice convo ice breaker.”
We’ll see what the convo is all about Sunday night. I plan to be Tweeting my opinion @Booth and blogging here.

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez will adorn the cover of Paper
Magazine's September issue, where she is flaunting her super-glamorous
looks in Balmain designs. The magazine will hit newsstands on 31 August.
The
46-year-old Waiting For Tonight singer, is well known for her
high-fashion red carpet style, which is being replicated in the Paper
Magazine photo shoot. The singer shared some photos from the shoot on
Instagram with the hashtag #LuxeinFlux.
In
the images, Lopez is seen wearing a sheer Balmain jumpsuit designed by
Olivier Rousteing, with whom she appears on the cover of the September
2015 issue as designer and muse. The shoot was undertaken by fashion
photographer Nicolas Moore and styled by longtime fashion professionals
Rob and Mariel. In one of the images, the actress and Rousteing can be
seen posing seductively.
Meanwhile,
in an interview with the magazine Lopez said: "To me, it's stuff that's
very custom or made for you or fitted that's how I like all my clothes
to feel. And when I think of luxury, whether it's a house or a car or
any luxury item, it's like something special about it that feels like
you. Or a piece of jewelry — you know what I mean? It has to have a
classic feel to it. I like things that are super trendy. I like things
that look like they could've been in this era or that era, but it still
feels modern."The September issue is titled Luxe In Flux, which is all about "defining luxury".
Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Gloria Estefan and more will appear in The Latin Explosion: A New America,
a new HBO documentary exploring and celebrating the historical and
cultural impact of Latino music and musicians in the United States.
Narrated by John Leguizamo, The Latin Explosion charts the
history of Latin music in the United States as well as the greater
cultural, political and economic impact of artists like Desi Arnaz in
the Fifties, Carlos Santana in the Sixties, Emilio and Gloria Estefan in
the Eighties, and Shakira, Lopez, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and
Pitbull in the Nineties and beyond. The film will also feature
interviews with Anthony, Martin, José Feliciano, Eva Longoria, George
Lopez, Los Lobos, Cheech Marin, Rita Moreno, Romeo Santos, Thalía and
Sofía Vergara.
The doc premieres November 16th on HBO and HBO Latino, and was
directed and produced by Matthew O'Neill and Jon Alpert. The duo earned
an Oscar nomination for their 2010 doc China's Unnatural Disaster about
the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Tommy Mottola — the veteran music
executive who's worked with Estefan, Lopez, Shakira, Mariah Carey, Carly
Simon, Hall and Oates and more — served as the film's executive
producer.
"We have assembled the largest array of Latino superstars ever in a
film telling a powerful story of their history and immigration,
politics, and rise from a small minority population to the most critical
demographic in the United States," Mottola said in a statement.
“Latinos spend $1.3 trillion a year, making them one of the most
powerful groups of consumers today. Latinos played a large part in the
outcome of the last election and will certainly be a larger part in the
upcoming 2016 election. There is no doubt in my mind that by 2025 we
will have a Latino president."
Casper Smart has proposed to Jennifer Lopez ''five times this year."
The
'On The Floor' hitmaker is reportedly fuming with her on/off boyfriend
as she is ''sick'' of constantly saying 'no' to his proposals.
A
source told Life & Style magazine: ''Jen finally snapped at Casper
by ordering him to stop proposing because she's sick and tired of saying
no.
''He's probably asked her at least five times this year alone!''
Meanwhile,
an insider previously claimed that Jennifer - who has seven-year-old
twins Max and Emme from a previous relationship - is always spending
time with Casper.
They said: ''Jennifer and Casper just get each
other. They have a wonderful working relationship and a wonderful real
relationship! Plus, her kids love him.
''Jen and Casper spend all
their free time with each other. He is always at 'American Idol' with
her. They work together as well, so time together is plentiful. They
like being with each other and find a lot of time to hang out with each
other.''
Jennifer Lopez takes time to meet one of her youngest fans on the set of her upcoming series Shades of Blue on Thursday (August 20) in Brooklyn, New York.
The prior day, the 46-year-old entertainer was joined on set by Ray Liotta and Drea De Matteo as they filmed scenes for the TV show.

Jennifer Lopez rocked curly hair on the set of 'Shades of Blue' in
Williamsburg, New York. The 46-year-old actress looked her part as a
detective in the new cop film with a beige trench coat as she stepped
out of a blacked out car.
The star-studded festival, which will be
held at the AmericanAirlines Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7, will have a

listeners was absolutely amazing," Sykes continued, as reported by
iHeartMedia's site. "We're thrilled to move the celebration to Miami
this year and excited to share what promises to be one of Latin music's
biggest nights with Telemundo viewers."
Tom Poleman, President of National

When you break it down, a celebrity look isn't all that impossible.
Take the complicated task of getting perfect red carpet curls, for
example. You can steal a celeb's spiral tresses with the right tips!
Just ask Ricky Pennisi, founder of a cutting technique for curly hair
called RI CI. We picked three different famous curly looks for Ricky to reveal the true styling secrets to! Yoncé. Remember Bey's big, bouncy curls? Beyoncé was
and still is known for having hair that's in control and defined.
"Section your hair into three levels, starting at the bottom and working
your way to the top, apply a styling gel," Ricky instructed.
To complete your curly look, opt for a setting spray. Ricky applies his own RI CI Memory Setting Spray
($15) all over the coils of his clients. Why? There's a method to the
curly madness. "This step blocks out the frizz and keeps curls in their
place," he noted. Finally,
flip your hair over and squeeze out any excess moisture on top. Air dry
your hair for a natural, "I woke up like this" look. J.LO. Jennifer Lopez isn't known for rocking curly
hair recently, but who doesn't love her throwback "Jenny from the block"
shorter, wavy curls?
If you have naturally, curly hair, this look is one you can pull off
easily, no glam squad required! "The best way to intensify your natural
curl is after you apply your styling gel and setting spray all over, use
a diffuser to dry your hair for super bouncy curls," Ricky advised.
"This will enhance curls by 30% and is great for those who have
naturally wavy or curly locks," Pennisi explained. MiMi. With the summer in full swing, remember that
the sun's harmful UV rays can lead to dry, brittle hair. You gotta water
those curls!
To keep your curls hydrated like Mariah's, try a blend of water with a conditioner. Ricky likes to mix his RI CI Drench Conditioner
($25) with water in a spray bottle to create a custom leave-in
treatment. "You can use this to detangle and refresh your hair. Spray it
six inches away from your locks and then squeeze out any excess
moisture. Then, go back to tanning," he said playfully.
Jennifer Lopez assured fans that her Las Vegas residency will showcase the culmination of her achievements as a musical artist.
"I'm excited about it. You know, I feel like I've been preparing for this my whole life," Lopez told Billboard.
The recording artist said that the
upcoming show will feature "all of the different things" that she did
musically, and "performing on stage and award shows, and touring,"
Billboard reported. The aim is to hold an event "in one place where
people from all over the world" could attend and "who wouldn't normally
come to a tour," the news outlet added.
"It's really an exciting prospect for me
to create the quintessential Jennifer Lopez experience in Vegas," the
singer further explained to Billboard. "It's just an opportunity that is
overwhelming and at the same time the most exciting thing that has
happened to me in a long time, so I'm giving it all I have."
As for what fans should expect from
Lopez's show in Las Vegas, she said that the event will feature her
performing her biggest hits, with elements of funk, hip-hop, and
old-fashioned glamour included as well.
"I am going to do what I think everybody
has come to know me for," the 46-year-old songstress revealed, as
quoted by Billboard. "It is going to be glamorous and beautiful and the
costumes and all of it. The production is something that I haven't
gotten to do yet. So it's going to be me in my element doing what I do
at the highest level and it's exciting."
In an interview with ET, Lopez said that concertgoers will enjoy her Vegas show, regardless if they are a fan of her music or not.
"[I want] the buzz to be, you know what?
You have to see J-Lo's show in Vegas. It's a great show, the singer
said, as reported by Billboard.
The brunette beauty's residency will
kick off on Jan. 20, 2016 at the Axis theater stage in Planet Hollywood
Resort and Casino, which is a part of Caesar's Entertainment. Other
scheduled dates include: 1/22, 1/27, 1/29, 1/30, 2/3, 2/5, 2/6, 2/9,
5/22, 5/25, 5/28, 5/29, 6/1, 6/3, 6/4, 6/8, 6/11 and 6/12, Billboard
listed.
Aside from her upcoming artist
residency, Lopez is also busy with her acting and various commitments.
She has a role in the NBC drama "Shades of Blue" and will return as a
judge in the 15th and farewell season of Fox's "American
Idol," the news outlet added. Lopez also has two fresh tracks: the newly
released "El Mismo Sol" with Alvaro Soler and Prince Royce's "Back it
Up," which features Pitbull as well.
Jennifer Lopez's Las Vegas residency will be ''glamorous and beautiful''.
The
46-year-old beauty is set to begin her residency at Axis theater stage
in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in January, and is already
struggling to contain her excitement, promising her fans she'll deliver a
never-to-be-forgotten show.
She said: ''It's really an exciting prospect for me to create the quintessential Jennifer Lopez experience in Vegas.
''It's
just an opportunity that is overwhelming and at the same time the most
exciting thing that has happened to me in a long time, so I'm giving it
all I have.''
Jennifer revealed the show will feature funk and hip-hop with a live band.
She told Billboard: ''It is going to be glamorous and beautiful and the costumes and all of it.
''The
production is something that I haven't gotten to do yet. So it's going
to be me in my element doing what I do at the highest level and it's
exciting.''
And Jennifer - who's enjoyed amazing success as a
musician and as an actress - admitted the residency will mark one of her
career highlights.
The 'On the Floor' hitmaker explained: ''I'm
excited about it. You know, I feel like I've been preparing for this my
whole life.''
Jennifer Lopez rocks high-top sneakers and sweats as she heads into a building on Friday afternoon (August 14) in New York City.
The 46-year-old singer and actress recently helped make one of her biggest fan’s dream come true. Jennifer posted a picture of a note she received from her fan Nick, asking if she could follow him on Instagram and she totally did! Nick, who’s met JLo a few times, took to his Instagram to share his excitement and a pic with the superstar.
“OMFGGGG I CANT BELIVE I MET MY QUEEN AGAIN😭😭😭 AND SHE JUST
FOLLOWED ME ON INSTAGRAM AND POSTED A PIC OF MY NOTE 😭😭 I LOVE HER SO
MUCH 😭😭😭 #JLO,” he captioned the image.
These pictures of Jennifer Lopez are what should come up from now on when you google "high-low dressing." The actress and singer, who is in New York City working on her new show Shades of Blue,
paired gray, slouchy sweatpants and a simple white t-shirt with white
platform sneakers and her multithousand-dollar Hermès Birkin bag. And
though J Lo's workout outfits are never that low on the scale (remember this $90 Milly t-shirt she wore to the gym?),
wearing the expensive leather purse with her laid-back workout gear is
definitely taking this trend to heart. Keep reading to see more pictures
of J Lo's chill outfit, and then check out a roundup of bags that have been named after celebrities.
Jennifer Lopez showed, once again, how much she loves and cares for her fans. The Boricua singer received a note from Nick,
one of her biggest fans, where he asked her to follow him on
Instagram: “Hey Jennifer I was hoping if you could follow me on
Instagram – (_nickspears_),
you followed me on Twitter like a year ago and I remember that day I
was crying. I couldn’t believe it, ‘cause you have been my idol for
years, so I was hoping if you can follow me on Instagram. Nick (Love
you).”
JLo snapped a picture of the letter and posted it on social media with a simple: “Ok (smiley face)”
At the same time the Bronx Diva uploaded her post, Nick was sharing a
photo of the two of them saying: “OMFGGGG I CAN’T BELIEVE I MET MY
QUEEN AGAIN (CRYING FACES) AND SHE JUST FOLLOWED ME ON INSTAGRAM AND
POSTED A PIC OF MY NOTE (MORE CRYING FACES) I LOVE HER SO MUCH (END OF
CRYING FACES) #JLO #jenniferlopez.”
Well kids, Nick just proved that if you are very persistent, you are most likely to get what you want.
